Taylor Swift, The Artist, the Songwriter, the filmmaker, the doctor, the Marketing Guru?
Taylor Swift Marketing Guru? We’ve come to know and love Taylor Swift. But is it only because of her specially crafted music that makes her so popular? Can we learn from her? I used to think her marketing strategies were red, but they’re golden.
Welcome to class.
Telling a good story, or love story that is
People who listen to Taylor’s music know how good of a storyteller she is. She can relay a whole story in her music that’s like painting a picture on a canvas. Or she can make a movie out of it, as in “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)”.
In this way, she connected and related with so many fans and their lives. A lot of people can relate to a messy breakup in their lives, and being able to connect with Taylor Swift on an emotional level with her songs is a huge factor in her marketing efforts. But you could argue that’s any good artist’s job, connecting with their fans. It doesn’t always have to be marketing efforts.
Creating demand for your product
There are many ways our Taylor Swift Marketing Guru accomplishes this demand.
- Makes great, award-winning music.
- Very strategic at releasing her music. Singles and teasing of her albums coming is her forte. But she also switched things up and Folklore was fully dropped and announced within days. No singles. Just dropped it. She did the same for Evermore. Both of them sold amazingly well and she got grammy wins for Folklore.
- Keeps incentives for selling hardcopy versions of her music. Some of which she personally signs and releases in spurts. In most cases, those signed CDs are bought by fans who already own that copy of her music. A lot of other artists concentrate on streaming only. However, Dr. Swift keeps going on both hardcopy and softcopy in a big way.
- Engages with fans, you need to be a hardcore fan for her to notice, but she or her team will reach out to you if you are dedicated. Sometimes you get invited to her house, get to bake cookies, and let you listen to her next album recording. She really does make friends with her fans.
- Taylor is known for hiding cryptic messages in her album covers, music videos, and lyrics. Hinting to upcoming albums or their tracklists.
- The list definitely goes on, but I think you get the idea.
Connect with your fans – give them what they want
Taylor knows how to connect with her fans and give them exactly what they want. For example, she’s been known to dig into various online Swift communities and find out exactly what they want. She’s even been known to stalk her fans to accomplish this.
Taylor keeps up with the trends too and stays relevant. For instance, she knows that people did not always want to buy her albums when they could stream them for free. By listening to her fans, she found she could infuse more realness and stories behind the songs, etc. in exchange for their hardcopy purchase.
Either way, she’s consistent with making good music and she knows what her fans want and can expect her to make.
Innovate & win
Taylor Swift has reinvented herself over and over, even though she’s still the same old Taylor. She’s gone from a country star, and pop icon, to fully immersed in folk music. But the best thing is she still stays consistent in her storytelling, great lyrics, and music composition.
To date, she’s the only woman who’s broken the record and won the best “Album of The Year” award in Grammy history, reaching three wins for said award. A testament to her ability to reinvent herself as a songwriter.
Create an ecosystem with your Collaborations
Taylor Swift is a big collaborator. Over the years she’s collaborated with artists in her music. Businesses like Starbucks, Keds, Target, and more. As well as TV and Music streaming services. It has all helped her gain major fame.
But all of that is part of fueling her whole ecosystem. If she didn’t have a large following, none of the above would have worked well. If you have a major loving fan seeing any of these collaborations, you bet they will be running to get that Starbucks collab. Also, big corporations will want to join forces with you when you have a large following.
